4-star barn conversion with alpaca companions in Northumberland countryside

Property Overview

Merry Burn Barn is a 4-star holiday home converted from a barn and finished to extremely high standards. The property has a private entrance, a cosy fireplace, and a garden overlooking the farmland. An electric vehicle charging station (7kW GoZero charger) sits immediately outside the barn for guest use.

Accommodation

The one-bedroom holiday home offers one bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen with everything needed to cook a full Christmas dinner. Guests sleep on a super comfortable bed made from wool with an alpaca wool duvet. The accommodation includes a washing machine, dishwasher, and a TV.

Location & Surroundings

The barn is 42 km from Housesteads Roman Fort and 17 km from Bellingham Golf Club and Heritage Centre. Newcastle International Airport is 69 km away, with nearby attractions including Kielder Castle and Hadrians Wall Vindolanda. Access requires driving down a private gravel farm road through two farm gates that must be closed behind.

Guest Experience

Guests consistently rate the accommodation highly for its spotless cleanliness and spacious rooms that exceed expectations. The owner decorated a Christmas tree for guests staying over the holiday, a welcome surprise. The property is home to alpacas that make great garden mates, plus abundant birdlife including curlew and redstart.

Special Amenities

The EV charger requires scanning a QR code from the welcome pack; charging costs 55p per kWh as of December 2024. The underfloor heating manifold is located in the back of the wardrobe, keeping the bedroom warm. The owners are friendly and on hand but allow guests privacy.

“The peacefulness here is striking, a truly well-equipped barn that feels brand new, set against the most beautiful countryside views. Hosts are genuinely welcoming, and the alpacas add an unexpected charm to the entire experience. It's a place that manages to be both a cozy retreat and a gateway to rural Northumberland.”
